Student’s 2016 Exemptions Claimed

Previous

This is question 38 on the FAFSA.

The response indicates the number of exemptions as reported on the student’s (and his/her spouse’s) 2016 income tax return.

If the student is "married/remarried" and filed a joint tax return, or is single, the total number of exemptions can be found on:

IRS Form Line #
1040 6d
1040A 6d

If the student (and his/her spouse) used the 1040EZ and checked either the “you” or “spouse” box on line 5, the student should have used EZ worksheet line F to determine the number of exemptions. If the student (and his/her spouse) used the 1040EZ and didn’t check either box on line 5, the total number of exemptions claimed will be 01 if the student is single, or 02 if the student is married.

The response cannot be blank unless the student will not file a tax return.
