Professional Judgment

An FAA may use Professional Judgment (PJ), on a case-by-case basis only, to alter the data elements used to calculate a student’s Expected Family Contribution (EFC). In addition to documenting such a decision in the student’s file, the FAA must also report the PJ to the CPS using FAA Access to CPS Online. This is done by selecting “EFC Adjustment requested” for the Professional Judgment field in Correction entry.

For more examples, refer to the IFAP Web site at

A PJ can only be applied to a non-rejected transaction and cannot be done on an initial application. “EFC Adjustment requested” should only be selected when Professional Judgment is being used on the transaction selected for correction. The resulting ISIR indicates the results of the PJ request.

The ISIR codes and their meanings are as follows:

No EFC adjustment processed
EFC adjustment processed
EFC adjustment attempted but failed
